Courtship

our ancestors has been able to live for a while but also convince at least

one partner to produce offspring. Darwin realized that natural selection
was of equal importance as ual selection because females often preferred
to mate with males with external ornaments or exaggerated features of
morphology. The human mind and the peacock’s tail have similar
biological functions. The peacock is tail evolved because peahens preferred
larger, more colorful tails. Peacocks would survive better with shorter,
lighter, drabber tails but, the ual choices of peahens have made peacocks
evolve big, bright plumage that takes energy to grow and time to preen,
and makes it harder to escape from predation. The tail makes no sense as
an adaptation for survival, but it makes perfect sense as an adaptation
for courtship.Similarly, the evolution of the human mind has brought
prolificacy to art, morality, language, and creativity. Both the human
mind and peacock tail have evolved to be used as courtship tools to
attract potential partners.
Another majestic bird whose courting
rituals are similar to humans is the Crane. Said to live one thousand
years, it is often used in Japanese cultural ceremonies such as marriage.
Cranes dance to reinforce pair bonds, to release tension, and sometimes
simply for pleasure. During typical Crane courtship there is a dancing
ceremony where they prance stiff-legged around each other, alternately
bowing with their wings extended out showing off their plumage. Then they
leap high in air with their legs dangling underneath them and finally they
perform a duet in unison solidifying their bond. Once a firm pair bond has
been established Cranes usually remain mated for life, although they will
replace a mate that has died or not met expectations. With humans
ccourtship is the period before engagement or marriage. During courtship
couples get to know each other by sending each other flowers, songs, gifts
and things that constitute wooing. Courtship also decides if there will be
a firm bond. Just like Cranes humans remain mated for life, although they
will replace a mate that has died or not met expectations.
After
studying different animals and researching courtship I’ve concluded that
human courtship is much more complex than a simple dance or the preening of
plumage. Unlike other animals our bodies have not adapted as dramatically
to each other’s desires. But, this is not to say that our minds have not
changed, they have because our aesthetic desires have increased. Men have
subjected women to unusual systems such as rib cracking corsets and
crippling foot bindings. Today it is in fashion for women to look waif and
emaciated. It is amazing how different living beings choose their mates
based on their dancing, their flamboyant plumage, or body appearance.
Aesthetics dominate ual selection when truly it should be a personality
and not outward appearances.
